Hiring Practices for Associates

Sterns & Weinroth welcomes inquiries from attorneys and law students seeking to join our firm.

Our associates are given considerable independence and responsibility early in their careers, with supervision and feedback combining to develop superior lawyering skills. Associate workload is coordinated through the firm's Workload Director and Practice Group Chairs. Professional development is assessed through ongoing evaluations and formal reviews. Associate training is encouraged and supported both in-house and through continuing legal education at outside seminars. Additionally, the firm utilizes an associate mentor program to assist associates with marketing initiatives.

Compensation for new associates is competitive. In addition, the firm offers a comprehensive benefits package, including group medical and dental plans, life insurance, group disability, and three weeks vacation annually.

Summer Associate Program

The firm uses its Summer Associate Program as its primary means of hiring entry-level attorneys. We assign to summer associates the same types of projects entrusted to first year associates. Our typical summer associate is an individual who has the academic background and life achievements to secure a position at any firm, but who seeks the benefit of practicing law at a mid-sized firm, like Sterns & Weinroth, that maintains a sophisticated and challenging practice, in Trenton.

The Program is run by the firm’s Summer Associate Committee. All assignments are made through one of the firm's Directors to ensure that workload is properly regulated. In addition, summer associates have the opportunity to sit in and observe the firm's attorneys try cases, argue motions and appeals, take depositions, meet with clients, and participate in the numerous other tasks that reflect the work of the firm. Our attorneys take the time to discuss work on an ongoing basis, and our summer associates can expect to receive more structured feedback during formal reviews.

The firm’s objective during the summer is to provide a realistic perspective on life as a full-time attorney at Sterns & Weinroth. This allows our summer associates to intelligently decide whether Sterns & Weinroth is the right place to begin their legal careers. A number of our attorneys began their practice at Sterns & Weinroth after participating in our Summer Associate Program, either upon graduation from law school or after completion of a judicial clerkship.

The length of the summer program is somewhat flexible, but typically begins around Memorial Day and ends shortly before classes commence in late August. Compensation is competitive and is based on our starting salary for first-year associates.

The firm participates in on-campus recruiting at all three New Jersey law schools, and welcomes inquiries from students from all law schools directly applying to the firm.
