Sterns & Weinroth has one of the largest Gaming Practices in New Jersey and the country. It includes the representation of casinos, horse racetracks, lotteries, internet companies and underwriters and encompasses all aspects of gaming law, including licensing, corporate, acquisition, development, financing, compliance policies and compliance investigations.
Sterns & Weinroth's gaming law attorneys
have been in the forefront of developments in this field since
the mid-1970s when the group played a strategic and integral
role in the enactment of New Jersey's Casino Control Act and
represented the first casino ever licensed in the state. Since
then, the firm's Gaming Practice has expanded and includes
not only the representation of numerous casino operators and
other gaming companies, but the representation of gaming equipment
suppliers, investors, investment banks and various companies
doing business with the gaming industry. The firm's Gaming
Practice has grown geographically as well, and now extends
throughout the United States as well as in Canada and Europe.
The group's attorneys regularly appear before the New Jersey
Casino Control Commission and regulatory agencies in other
jurisdictions on behalf of a wide range of clients. Several
of the firm's attorneys are Registered Legislative Agents who
have represented the interests of gaming clients before the
Office of the Governor and the New Jersey Legislature, seeking
alternate solutions to the unique problems our clients encounter.
Our attorneys successfully navigate clients through the complex
maze of gaming regulations by combining a full understanding
of client needs, knowledge of the legislative branch and extensive
experience with gaming matters.
Our gaming law attorneys are active members of the Casino Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the International Association of Gaming Attorneys. Paul M. O'Gara, the Group's Chair, has been named one of The Best Lawyers in America in gaming law. He has been on the Board of the International Association of Gaming Attorneys since 1990 and served as its President from 2003 to 2004. Joel H. Sterns, one of the firm's founding members, also served as President of the International Association of Gaming Attorneys, from 1988 to 1989. In 1992, Mr. Sterns was elected as a Counselor of the Association. Finally, Dennis Daly, who joined the firm as Of Counsel in 2005, served as an attorney for 23 years with the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, most recently as its General Counsel, bringing the practice his unique talents and perspective.
